Zohran Kwame Mamdani, a 34-year-old state lawmaker who transformed himself into an electrifying voice for New Yorkers disillusioned with runaway living costs and a scandal-plagued old guard, was elected the citys 111th mayor on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
His victory, stretching from the gentrified corridors of Brooklyn to the working-class immigrant enclaves of Queens, completed one of the most remarkable political upsets in New York history and will soon put a democratic socialist in City Hall.

Trump calls for deporting natural-born US citizens
Trump calls for deporting US citizens: "We also have a lot of bad people that have been here for a long time ... many of them were born in our country. I think we ought to get them the hell out of here too, if you want to know the truth. So maybe that'll be the next job."

I was told this would never happen. I was just being hysterical for suggesting it.

Trump Fires Nearly the Entire Civil Rights Branch of D.H.S.
Source: The New York Times
The Trump administration fired nearly the entire civil rights branch of the Department of Homeland Security on Friday, gutting a government office responsible for conducting oversight of President Trumps immigration crackdown.
The more than 100 staff members were told on Friday they would be put on leave for 60 days to find another job in the administration or be fired in May, according to five current and former government officials. Mr. Trump also closed the ombudsman for Citizenship and Immigration Services, another office responsible for scrutinizing the administrations legal immigration policies.
The moves were the latest attempt by Mr. Trump to root out civil rights divisions and oversight mechanisms across government agencies. But the shuttering of the Homeland Security Departments Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties was particularly notable given the lack of transparency over the administrations immigration crackdown.

Supreme Court won't lift lower court order unfreezing foreign aid funds
Source: CBS
The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to halt a lower court order that required the Trump administration to unfreeze nearly $2 billion in foreign-aid funding, clearing the way for the money to flow to groups that have done work for the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development overseas.
The decision from the high court ends a pause Chief Justice John Roberts issued last week to allow the high court time to more fully consider a request from the Trump administration to intervene in the ongoing court battle over a 90-day pause on foreign assistance funds.
The chief justice issued a brief administrative last Wednesday with a midnight deadline for foreign aid payments approaching before the full court acted on President Trump's bid for emergency relief.

Trump signs order directing release of JFK assassination files
Source: The Hill
President Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the release of federal government documents related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
The order directs the director of national intelligence and attorney general to present a plan within 15 days for the full and complete release of records relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
I have now determined that the continued redaction and withholding of information from records pertaining to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is not consistent with the public interest and the release of these records is long overdue, the order states.
And although no Act of Congress directs the release of information pertaining to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I have determined that the release of all records in the Federal Governments possession pertaining to each of those assassinations is also in the public interest, the order continues.

Biden decides to block U.S. Steel sale to Japanese buyer
Source: Washington Post
President Joe Biden has decided to officially block Nippon Steels proposed purchase of U.S. Steel, a once-iconic American company whose sale to a foreign buyer he publicly opposed for months, according to two administration officials who were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.
Barring an unforeseen change of heart, which the officials do not expect, a White House announcement of the presidential finding is planned as soon as Friday.
Biden opted to kill the deal despite intense efforts by some of his senior advisers to sway him in recent days, who warned that rejecting a sizable investment from a top Japanese corporation could damage U.S. relations with Japan.
Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel have vowed to pursue legal action against the government, claiming it failed to follow proper procedures during its consideration of the acquisition.
